With an AQI of 156 at 9:10 am on Tuesday (June 20, 2023), Dhaka is once again at the top of the list of cities with the worst air quality in the world.
The air in Dhaka was deemed "unhealthy."
An AQI of 151 to 200 is deemed "unhealthy," 200 to 300 is deemed "very unhealthy," and 301 or higher is deemed "hazardous," causing serious health hazards to locals.
Pakistan`s Lahore, India`s Delhi and Pakistan`s Karachi occupied the second, third and fourth spots in the list, with AQI scores of 152, 152 and 121, respectively.
The AQI, an index for reporting daily air quality, informs people how clean or polluted the air of a certain city is and what associated health effects might be a concern for them.
Particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2, and ozone are the five pollutants that make up Bangladesh`s air quality index (AQI).
Air pollution has always been a problem in Dhaka. Winter is often when the air quality deteriorates, and monsoon season is when it gets better.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution causes the deaths of an estimated seven million people annually, primarily because it increases mortality from conditions like heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and acute respiratory infections.
